"My role is extremely exciting; there’s never a dull day."
Ruby Miles is a Content Creator Apprentice. Read Ruby’s story to learn how a visit from Ideagen and Think Big to her college ignited her realization that she could achieve her marketing career goals.
How I got here
When leaving college, I felt like I was being pulled in many different directions. Should I follow my friends to university, do another year at college, or get a job unrelated to my personal goals? None of these options suited me because I felt I needed to expand my knowledge and continue my education without the long-term commitment of university. That's when I started searching for an apprenticeship.
My next stumbling block was deciding what my interests were. Although I was set on finance, because it was something I was good at, I couldn't picture myself doing it long term due to my innovative nature. After a lot of debate and many career quizzes (that were not helpful), I concluded on a role in marketing.
Ideagen and Think Big visited my college, and I realized that I could achieve my goal of getting into marketing. And there's no better place to do it than at Ideagen.
About my role
My role at Ideagen as a Content Creator is extremely exciting. I get new design tasks daily, ranging from building landing pages to social media reviews. It's never a dull day.
Although I may seem confident when talking about my responsibilities now, I certainly was not when I first started. However, my wonderful team was very welcoming and provided a great support system, which allowed me to pick up things fast. This is why I love my days in the office. The working atmosphere is focused and really helps my productivity. I never feel too pressured because there's always a friendly face to reach out to for help when needed.
The skills I use
As I've mentioned, my role can be very diverse, so a key skill that is required is adaptability. Being able to transfer skills to different tasks ensures that you are not slipping in any specific area. Ideagen does not expect the finished product, so don't dwell on the skills you don’t have, but rather on the skills and experience you can gain.
My tips for others
There are a few things that are helpful to keep in mind throughout your journey:
- Communicate: Don't be afraid to ask for help. It is not a weakness but will help you perform at your best and learn necessary skills.
- Be ambitious: Going above and beyond will help you show the best version of yourself. However, remember not to put too much pressure on yourself.
- Be organized: Although this may sound generic, it really pays off to keep track of your tasks. It will help your future self be aware of ongoing tasks and keep you on top of everything.
More about me
Due to my creative nature, I've had many hobbies and interests, but they've never seemed to stick. I've dipped in and out of dance, kickboxing and many other random pastimes. It's hard to narrow down the ones that truly describe me.
One thing that has never changed is my passion for Formula One. From watching Grand Prix races on the weekend to even visiting Ferrari Land (which did feel like a slight betrayal as a Mercedes fan), I am a die-hard fan.
