EHS Daily Advisor: Safety leadership lessons of the laws of physics
The laws of physics have plenty to teach us about improving safety and cutting accident and ill health rates. The way these laws were established, by sceptical analysis of data and testing hypotheses over and over, is a useful model for validating OSH initiatives. Looking at the laws of physics themselves, which explain the behaviour of matter and energy condition variables, also hold valuable lessons about the way we can motivate (and demotivate!) people to develop and maintain positive safety cultures.
Join Louis Wustemann and Alastair Davey, former Global VP of Health Safety and Environment at Sodexo, to explore the parallels between the fundamental rules that govern the world and the efforts workplaces take to stop people coming to harm at work.
In the session you will learn:
- What the laws of thermodynamics show us about the necessity to refresh safety initiatives
- The similarities between black holes and zero accident programmes
- Why quantum mechanics reminds us all of the need to stay humble
