What is psychological safety?
Psychological safety is basically where you can be your authentic self without fear of negative consequences. Can you imagine a workplace where you can express your opinions, thoughts and ideas without fear of ridicule or punishment. Yes, we can imagine but why does it matter and is it even possible…?
Why does psychological safety matter?
Well, if you feel psychologically safe, you’re more likely to share your ideas and collaborate openly. How many times have you sat in a meeting, or when actively doing your job, have you thought of better ways to do things? Or you've been watching how others are working and you think of a better, more efficient or safer way to carry out that activity?
So how can we build psychological safety into our lives and workplaces?
This one can’t be emphasized enough – lead by example! If you are a leader in an organization, set the tone. Encourage open communication and show vulnerability. Share your mistakes! It makes it more relatable.
- Active listening: When someone talks, really listen to what they are saying, particularly if this is new to everyone. They might not tell you what’s on their mind until they build up that trust so just keep listening. Over time, this will create trust, and everyone will strive for shared purpose and values.
- Foster inclusivity: Ensure everyone’s voice is heard regardless of their role or background, whether that is directly, or through a mechanism like a mobile platform. Make that communication platform an open one.
- Embrace mistakes: Focus on what was learned and where you can improve. Encourage risk-taking and innovation. A blame culture in any business eliminates creativity and morale. We are all human beings trying to make informed decisions and we don’t always get it right.
Psychological safety fosters an environment where everyone involved can thrive. Create a transparent open workplace where people feel valued, heard and free to be themselves. Not only will it create a happier, safer place – it will help the organization thrive.
As Ted Lasso teaches…
Lean into vulnerability. Be open to good ideas that come your way. Inspire confidence in those around you. Doing the right thing is never the wrong thing.
And finally,
Be a goldfish!
